<span style="font-size: large;">Seasonal changes have brought new birds to the area and woodpeckers are traveling along the Amargosa River as they shift from higher elevation breeding territories to wintering areas. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Sapsuckers are woodpeckers that cut or drill into tree bark and lick up the sap with long highly specialized tongues. They also eat seeds, fruits,and insects.Another food source is the moist inner layers of bark. Their chisel-like bills are extremely versatile.</span><br />

<b>The Nature Conservancy's Volunteer Day</b><b><span style="font-size: small;">Beatty, NV</span></b></h2>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
On Saturday June 11th, Volunteers gathered at the Stagecoach Inn in Beatty, NV. After a short talk about TNC, it's overall mission, and local objectives, we got to work. We split into 3 groups. The first group walked downstream along thee Amargosa River picking up trash, the second drove to the Amargosa Conservancy's Apfel Park for some cleanup, weed removal, and maintenance. Group three headed to TNC's Torrance Ranch to build some redwood picnic tables, and remove invasive weeds.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Thank you to everyone!</b> We had a great time, everyone worked so hard to make it a successful day. The weather cooperated with a soft cool breeze and light cloud cover, creating a perfect morning to work outside.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Local residents of Beatty and Amargosa, the Boy Scouts of Beatty, members of the Red Rock Audubon Society, from both Pahrump and Las Vegas, and members of the Amargosa Conservancy, worked together from 9am till noon.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Afterwards everyone met at Torrance Ranch to have lunch while trying out the new picnic tables. Hot dogs, veggie burgers, turkey burgers, a huge salad, some fresh fruit, cookies, and lots of cold drinks kept everyone around till early afternoon. The group enjoyed watching birds, making friends, and enjoying the results from the morning's hard work. It was noteworthey that so many folks from the May 21st, Red Rock Audubon Society Bird Walk came out to help. We are building a Beatty team!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Thanks again everyone. What fun!</div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The May 21st Beatty Bird Walk was great fun. With our trip leader Christiana Manville of Red Rock Audubon Society, 41 species were seen. Many first time bird walkers got some great looks at local birds using binoculars provided by The Nature Conservancy.</span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">One of the day's highlights were Western Kingbirds. These large migratory flycatchers come from Mexico and Central America to Beatty and all over Western North America for nesting season. We found a Kingbird nest in a trimmed fan palm at the Stagecoach Inn, and another in a Cottonwood tree at Torrance Ranch.</span><br />

Broad-winged Hawk</div>
On Thurdsay April 21, at Parker Ranch in Beatty, Laura Cunningham and I were birding and saw a Broad-winged Hawk flying overhead, being chased by a Cooper's Hawk. Broad-winged Hawks can be Identified by their dark tail bands and broad wings with a dark trailing edge. This may be Nye County's only record to date! I have reported to E-bird for permanent record-keeping. (Contact the Nature Conservancy for access to Parker Ranch)<br />
<br />
A pair of Northern Harriers ( formerly called Marsh Hawks) are nesting at Torrance Ranch. Here is a shot of the eggs, 4 so far, which were being incubated by the female. There is also a nesting pair at Parker Ranch. There may be several other pairs in the Beatty area. I have noticed them in other areas along the river.<br />

Yellow Warblers have also arrived and males are claiming territories in Willow filled riparian areas along the Amargosa River. Songbirds "claim a territory by singing from prominent high perches throughout the territory, and defending against other male Yellow Warblers by fighting with them when they cross boundaries. Yellow Warblers will nest in dense willow along the Amargosa River.</div>

Another nest in an adjacent territory on Parker Ranch has been started by an apparently un-mated male. I followed him around for almost two hours while he moved from one singing spot to another. There was no sign of a female. Male Bell's Vireo build approximately the first 40% of the nest then, if the female approves of the construction and location, she'll join in to finish it. Sometimes un-mated male build a "starter nest" apparently hoping to attract a mate by being ready to go if a female arrives. This male seems to have gone un-mated last year, as I found the old "starter nest from last year, next to this year's attempt.</div>

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; line-height: 17.12px;">Killdeer are well known for their “broken wing display”, faking an injury to attract attention, then leading the pursuer away from eggs or chicks. The young are precocial, and like a chicken, they hatch and soon are running around. The adults sometimes hide them under the wings, creating the impression of a multi-legged Killdeer! They lay their eggs right out on the ground in a gravelly area that is usually flat. Sometimes they even lay their eggs on the roof of a big flat building. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Virginia Rails frequent the marshy areas in Oasis Valley. At Torrance Ranch, Parker Ranch, and from the bridge in Beatty all the way to Bombo’s Pond, they secretively patrol cattails, bulrush, and other marsh vegetation year round. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">More often heard than seen, their calls have been compared to a pig squealing, or a toilet plunger plunging. In spring, the males begin to sound the” kidik” call, rhythmically repeating it, in search of a mate. </span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Rails are very secretive, and can easily hide in the tall dense river plants that make up their habitat. If you see a Virginia Rail, consider it a treat. They build a nest deep in cattails or other dense river or pond vegetation. The huge toes of a Rail allow it to walk on top of aquatic plants. There are over 40 species of Rails in the world. Some species are flightless.</span><br />

smallest of the falcons. Amazing miniature predators, they take mice, insects,
lizards and sometimes small birds. Kestrels are seen on phone poles, tall
trees, cliffs, and building tops. Anywhere that the high perch gives a
commanding view of an open area below, is an excellent perch. The males have
beautiful blue wings. Kestrels, like all falcons, have incredible vision. Their

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">They eat mostly insects, but will come to a bird feeder for sunflower seeds, suet, and small fruits like raisins. Northern Flickers are large, active, and vocal. Their bright red underwings can be seen from a distance.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">In eastern North America, the underwings of Flickers are yellow! The “Yellow-shafted Flicker” is not considered to be a different species. Occasionally, a yellow one will turn up in this area. Flickers are apparently often caught by hawks, which sometimes clip the feathers if their avian prey before eating it.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">In fall and winter, Sapsuckers, which are woodpeckers, can be found in trees throughout the area. Sapsuckers are an important species because their foraging behavior helps other birds. Red-naped Sapsuckers and Red-Breasted Sapsuckers chisel away rows of little sections of bark to lick sap. Sapsuckers chiseling are often followed by an amazing array of birds which lick the remaining sap, just after the Sapsucker has moved on.</span><br />
